Why a Vessel Safety Check is important (Video)!
America's Waterway Watch Program (Video)!

-  Do you know how to tell if someone is drowning?  You could be dead wrong!

-  The USCG Has Issued An Alert About Channel Changing On VHF Radios With DSC.

-  Join the Nixle Community Information Exchange. Receive trusted alerts & advisories from your local police departments, government agencies & schools.

-  WARNING:  The recent storms have washed the sand from Venice Beach along the Jetty and it has settled at the MDR North entrance. In a matter of 10 days, the depth at the North entrance went from about 18-20 feet to about 16 inches or less at low tide.  The Shoal is around 75+ feet in length from the Jetty toward the Breakwater at this time.  Fortunately, it's soft sand but it's very dense. Baywatch & the Sheriff are suggesting that if you depart via the North entrance, try to hug the Breakwater and go slow.  If you use the South entrance, also be careful and go slow.

-  THE U.S. COAST GUARD TERMINATED THE TRANSMISSION OF ALL U.S. LORAN-C SIGNALS EFFECTIVE 2000Z 08 FEB 2010.  AT THAT TIME, THE U.S. LORAN-C SIGNAL BECAME UNUSABLE AND PERMANENTLY DISCONTINUED.  THIS TERMINATION DOES NOT AFFECT U.S. PARTICIPATION IN THE RUSSIAN-AMERICAN OR CANADIAN LORAN-C CHAINS.  U.S. PARTICIPATION IN THESE CHAINS WILL CONTINUE TEMPORARILY IN ACCORDANCE WITH INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS.

-  Good Samaritans in California will now be protected from lawsuits under two new laws signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on August 5, 2009.  See details here.

-  Recent Rule Change:  Vessels less than 20 Meters (65 feet) in length are no longer required to carry a bell.   See rule 33A on the Navcen Changes page.

-  Note:  As of February 1, 2009, 121.5/243 MHz. EPIRBs are no longer being monitored.  For more information, see this page on EPIRBs.

-  If you live in L.A. County and have a cell phone or VOIP line, be sure to register it on the new L.A. County reverse 911 emergency system, Alert LA County.
